Updated Ocean Color Science Focus! Series Now at NASA’s OB.DAAC

The study of ocean color from space is enabled by satellite-borne remote sensing instruments such as NASA’s Sea-viewing Wide Field-of-view Sensor (SeaWiFS) and the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS). The ocean color images and data returned by these instruments allow scientists and researchers to study a wide range of physical, chemical, and biological ocean processes on a global scale.
To better explain and highlight the significance of these ocean color observations, NASA’s Goddard Earth Sciences Data and Information Services Center (GES DISC) produced a series of 35 Science Focus! articles related to ocean color. These articles, written by GES DISC Senior Support Scientist Dr. James Acker and originally published in 1999-2003, have recently been updated and are now available through NASA’s Ocean Biology DAAC (OB.DAAC).
The articles highlight scientific phenomena, noteworthy events, and remarkable images that have been observed by NASA ocean color sensors. Along with numerous images created from SeaWiFS and MODIS instrument data, the articles discuss the scientific principles behind the images and provide links for additional research and information.
The GES DISC and OB.DAAC are two of NASA's 12 Earth Observing System Data and Information System (EOSDIS) Distributed Active Archive Centers (DAACs) that process, archive, and distribute discipline-specific data as part of NASA’s Earth Science Data Systems Program.
